They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh
– Matthew 2:11 (NLT)
Having followed the star to the house where Jesus resides the wise men see him for the first time. Their response was one of worship: they bow down and worship him. This is an act of faith. Despite him not being in an opulent palace surrounded by glory they still believe he is the true king and they worship him.
They worship with their bodies and they worship with their gifts. The wise men bring themselves and their possessions and they lay it all before Jesus.
This is an act of true surrender in line with Jesus’ later call to the rich young ruler to give everything to the poor and follow him.
These are the actions of disciples who are fully surrendered to him. Will we also surrender as wise people to jesus?
