“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
– Matthew 3:11
John continues to unfold the nature and implications of repentance and belief: He again states that baptism with water prodeeds the commencement of true repentance and belief.
When we turn our hearts to God we publicly testify to it in the act of baptism.John then brings Jesus into the discourse. Jesus is greater than John. John tells how he will baptise those who repent and believe not only in water, but in the Holy Spirit. We will be drenched in the very presence of God!
The repentant life is a spirit-drenched life. This allows us to live in God’s presence and in his strength.
To sustain life as a follower of Jesus we NEED this drenching of the Spirit. It’s not an added extra – it’s an actual essential.
May we live lives of repentance and belief, evidenced by water baptism, and drenched in the power, presence and person of the Holy Spirit.
